Huntington Beach, CA also known as Surf City USA (our home city here at Kyjen, and the city where I grew up)  is a great place to visit with dogs. The city was named “DogTown USA” by Dog Fancy Magazine in 2009 for its canine friendliness. In this video I show you the two best dog-friendly hotels in Huntington Beach, or where I suggest you stay when you visit:

• The Shore Break hotel even has special packages for visitors with dogs, including pet sitting and some cool pet amenities.
• The Hilton Waterfront Resort also has a dog package, where they waive the $75 pet fee along with some good dog amenities.

A quick internet search will pull up other less expensive dog firendly hotels in Huntington Beach, but in my opinion these are the two best choices and they have by far the best locations.

Lake Powell must be close to heaven for dogs. Lake Powell is the second largest man-made reservoir in the US, located between Utah and Arizona border. If you visit via houseboat, there are literally hundreds of coves where you can relax and your dogs can run free.  The scenery is spectacular, I call it “Grand Canyon on a lake”.  Check out this video to see for yourself.  If you’ve never been there, it’s another place to add to your list of places to see before you die (in my opinion at least). While technically not in Colorado, I added it to our google map of Dog-friendly places in the Colorado area.

One of the great things about Lake Powell is once you are out on the lake, you don’t need to worry about breaking out your wallet and spending money everytime you need to eat or want to do something.   If you vacation there via boat, once you are anchored in your own private cove or beach you can relax and enjoy yourself.  If you rent a houseboat, you’ll have all the luxuries of home without all the dirt and other things many people don’t like about camping.

In addition to the incredible Grand-Canyon-like scenery, it’s a paradise for dogs.  Dogs can run and swim to their hearts content, and at night they sleep like dead dogs!

Here’s a video of some beautiful mountain scenery in Colorado from a recent trip with our dogs. It’s still early in the Fall, but you can catch a glimpse of some of the dazzling colors that will soon cover the mountainsides. This footage is from a vantage point on Highway 133 just outside of Crested Butte. From here we traveled over Kebler Pass and McClure Pass.

We originally planned to go on a fishing trip, but everytime we saw a good spot, the dogs jumped in for a swim and the fish were gone.  Oh well! The important part was that we got outside and all had a good time!

Tanglewood Trail is a dog-friendly hike along Deer Creek about one hour southwest of Denver in the Mt. Evans Wilderness area. It’s a really nice hike 3.7 mile hike (each way).  What I liked most about this hike is the trail runs along aside a stream most of the way, and there’s a goal to reach — the saddle or summit. If you just “Get Out and Play”, it’s amazing what you can see and how great you will feel after you are done!

Here’s a video of our Kyjen Colorado sales team doing a little R&D (ha! ha!).  We left the office early one day with our dogs for a short, but fun hike up Devil’s Head Fire Lookout. You can see our well-outfitted pack of dogs enjoying the hike in their Outward Hound dog backpacks.

The Devils Head Fire Lookout is a great hike about 45 minutes southwest of Denver in the Pike National Forest.  The US Forest Service maintains a fire observation post at the top. It’s a relatively short hike at 1.3 miles each way (but it can be tough if you are not used to the elevation).  Some of the great views from the hike can be seen in the video. Stay tuned for the outtakes at the end for some good laughs!
