Now… Get out and play!

We met two amazing folks hiking 3,100 miles (the entire Continental Divide Trail) this weekend!

At the end of our hike to Herman Gulch Lake we were very fortunate to run into an amazing couple trekking on a 7 month, 3,100 mile hike, for cancer. They are hiking the entire Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada!

See their web site blog here: http://cancerhike.com/

They are amazing people. Both kind and a pleasure to talk to. On average, these two are hiking 22 miles per day! Wow!

You can make a donation to their cause too! Kyjen just made one!

Dog backpacks remind dogs of their importance, proven to prevent run-away dog problem too!

At Kyjen, we design and create Outward Hound backpacks. We have always believed in the benefits of dogs wearing a backpack.  Dogs aim to please their people. By wearing a backpack they can assist in everyday tasks… Even if the job consists of carrying your kids’ books to the bus stop!

We discovered an interesting article this week. Some claim that by wearing a dog backpack, it can prevent dogs from running away! Could this be true? This is a good read if you know of any runaway dogs:  http://thethreedogblog.com/how-to-stop-dogs-running-away-cheap-dog-backpacks.html

Even a Manatee in Florida plays with our toys!

One of our customers in Florida just emailed us this picture of a manatee playing with one of our H2O toys!  Apparently multiple manatees like to play with our H2O toys in the canal behind her house. Very cool!

If you have any animals besides dogs that like to play with our toys, please email us so we can share.

Huntington Beach Dog Surf Contest ‘09

cimg1615 You missed a lot fun if you didn’t catch the 2009 SurfinPaws Huntington Beach Dog Surf contest and festival this weekend!  In addition to all the surfing dog contestants, there were hundreds of people and most brought their dogs.  There were all kinds of dog-related booths (including one from us at Kyjen). All in all, it was just a bunch of happy people and dogs enjoying the perfect 75 degree summer day!  It was also great to see so many dogs wearing their Outward Hound lifejackets!

Can we turn it off/on like dogs?

On/OffI’m always amazed at how dogs can turn it off/on almost instantly. All my past dogs and McMoose do this. They can be deep asleep and with a slightly opened eye, then, in a flash, if they see the leash, the special pack, or the running or hiking shoes and — boom — they are 100% crazy energized and ready to go.

We humans, well at least most of us, need some coffee, or stretch time or whatever other excuse we can think of before we are ready to start a difficult task, chore or exercise.

Just today I tried to be like McMoose. I woke up, drank no coffee, went out and exercised and immediately got down to my most important task. I turned it off/on instantly like my dog and it worked! Maybe I can do this tonight when it’s time to turn if off!

Have you noticed this, and can you learn form your dog to make it happen?

A surf contest for dogs!

Since Kyjen is based in Huntington Beach, California (and that I grew up surfing here), we are really excited to be a sponsor of the Huntington Beach SurfingPaws dog surf contest on July 11th, 2009.  All profits go to the Orange County SCPA.

There are lessons going on before the contest during the month of June. Of course, we’ll have free Outward Hound Life Jackets available for your dog. If he falls off the board and cannot swim in the waves, he’ll stay safely afloat! There’s a full day and an evening of events – we hope you can make it!  Surfs up for the dogs in HB! See the event website for more details.

Wow, that means I only have about three weeks to teach McMoose how to surf.  We’ll see you at dog beach!
